Virtual Reality In A Nutshell

There are so many emerging technologies but one of the most promising out there is virtual reality.

In this article, we’ll be going over what virtual reality is, the technology inside of a headset and some applications!

What is Virtual Reality?

The definition of VR is actually in its name. It’s a reality that doesn’t actually exist. This reality is created by computers that allow you (the user) to interact with the environment.

VR Headsets

This is the HP Reverb G2! A new headset coming out November 2020!

Without getting too technical, a VR headset consists of a display with eyeholes in front of it, stereo sound which allows for sounds to be heard in multiple places and a strap to adjust the position and tightness on your head. The motion tracking will usually consist of either cameras on the headset (as shown by the new HP Reverb G2) or external cameras around the room. The technology inside of the headset plus the motion tracking can cause an immersive experience and allow you to explore the virtual world!

Applications

Some applications include:

  • Gaming
  • Dangerous jobs
  • Education
  • Architecture
  • Healthcare

Gaming

VR gaming introduces a whole new level of immersion. Studies show that players were less aware of their surroundings, focused on the game and nothing else — VR eliminates distractions due to its interactive environment. My personal favourite games are Beat Saber and Superhot!

Making Jobs Easier

VR can help save lives. Virtual reality is being used to train those who have dangerous jobs (military, firefighters etc.). It does this by simulating a scenario that can be stressful and requires the specialist to solve the problem. It can show how the specialist will react and can help personalize their training. In architecture, it can be used to simulate how the foundation appears and how structurally stable it is.

Education

Rather than sitting through a boring lecture and swallowing up information without comprehending, we can use VR to create a more interactive environment. Virtual field trips can be help where students can go back in time for history or into space for science. The uses don’t stop there. For kids with special needs, VR can be used to train social skills safely.

Architecture

VR can be used to simulate builds. This can help with checking structural support and the aesthetics. Some apps include VREX and ARki.

Healthcare

Healthcare is one of the most useful applications of VR. It is used to assist with mental health disorders and memory loss. Anxiety has been treated using methods like exposure therapy. Memory loss has been treated by showing various environments triggering memories from the patients past.

Conclusion

VR is a really cool technology and there are so many things that VR can help with! This is the first article I’ve ever written. I’d love to hear your thoughts! Hopefully this article taught you something. Feel free to follow me on Twitter @EthanSelvarajah if you want to learn more! :)
